Kava’s Pacific roots
Kava was probably domesticated in northern Vanuatu roughly 3,000 years ago, then carried as living cuttings among Pacific islands. Ni-Vanuatu, iTaukei Fijian, Tongan, Samoan, Native Hawaiian, Pohnpeian, and other Oceanic communities developed distinct traditions around water-prepared roots and rhizomes.
